I have played several sports over the years, with currently my main focus being netball. I play both standard 7-aside and more recently have taken the opportunity to play mixed indoor netball for a local Hamilton club. This experience has provided me with a new challenge of playing in a mixed team which has been really interesting to adapt and challenge my personal skillset. I enjoy playing teams sports as having an inclusive culture and environment is really important to me. I’ve been fortunate to play for clubs and teams where everyone looks out for each other as a family, this in turn making my overall experience of the sport and activity that much more positive.
I enjoy keeping busy and have found difficulty when sports I am involved with aren’t as time demanding, although this can work for some, I like to fill my time with trainings and games. My current team trains once a week with a tournament once a month, to supplement this I train additionally outside of normal hours and as I am a shooter need to keep practicing at that! I would like to be able to achieve bigger things than where I am playing at right now and hopefully one day go elite. I always get this rush of adrenaline that keeps me going when I am training/playing and this feeling, along with having people supporting me, is always something to keep me going. I feel alive and ready for anything.
My team that I played in last year was only a starting point in my netball journey. With an amazing team and coach, I develop and continue to grow my netball knowledge and skillset. I see teams like the Silver Ferns and Sunshine Coast Lightening play, and they make me want to push myself so that one day I could be playing on those courts.
Advice that I would give to other girls and women to help them on their journey to get active is to just give it a go and whether it’s for you or not there will be something that is your taste. Sport is always something that I have really enjoyed and I’m sure it will bring a smile to your face.
