My involvement with sport started with soccer when I was about five. Since then, I have played Rippa Rugby, and participated in gymnastics, athletics, netball and tennis. Currently, I play netball, volleyball and basketball - all competitively.
From a very young age I have been surrounded by all types of physical activity, not just sport. We often go on hikes and bike rides as a family and that definitely works up a sweat.
Believe it or not, but I love training for my sports. I really enjoy doing things you knew your body couldn’t have done a week ago. That is the most rewarding feeling for me. I choose to be active because I enjoy learning new things and the feeling of improvement.
But nothing beats the friends and memories you make while away on tournaments or sport related trips. For me, sport and physical activity has offered me opportunities to make friends for life and memories I will never forget.
Being fully involved in three sports means a lot of training and games to attend. This is extremely difficult when you are also finishing school and have a job. This year I learned a lot about time management and what it takes to play three sports competitively – it’s not always easy, but if you’re committed it is possible to juggle so that you can do it all. Personally, I take it day by day and try not to get too stressed about it. Because I love what I’m doing so much I don’t mind it taking up my day.
I love being active - the rush and adrenaline of those two extra laps or discovering amazing views while hiking. It makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something and even the little things make a big difference. I couldn’t imagine my life without physical activity .
I plan to continue pursuing sport. I’m not fussy on what level I play at, whether it’s at a social level, I just want to stay involved.
My advice to other young women would be to give things a go! Being active, whether this is sport, physical activity or recreation, opens up so many opportunities you never thought possible and gives you the chance to meet great people. Getting moving is a lot of fun, and if you find the right group of people and right activities, you won’t look back!
